The Garden
A Living Revival: The Story of Our Garden
When we moved into the Pagenhaus in 2020, the grounds surrounding our historic home were in a quiet state of neglect. In front of Haus A, overgrown bushes blocked out light, while a single flower border lined the walkway to Haus C—and the path to Haus B had no beds at all.
Over the past six years, caring for the grounds grew into a joyful, ongoing stewardship. Together, James and Tomas stepped into the role of garden custodians, looking after the vast grounds single-handedly in accordance with the collective wishes of the Hausgemeinschaft.
Step by step, the garden began to open up:
Restoring Light & Balance: Removing old, dense lilac bushes was a defining milestone. It immediately freed the soil from competing roots, allowing precious sunlight to reach the ground so the Hainbuche hedge along the front could finally thrive.
Framing the Thresholds: New, tailored flower beds were laid along the approach to Haus B, creating a warm, welcoming border for every section of the house.
Securing the Future: Drilling a dedicated groundwater well (Grundwasserbrunnen) proved to be a game-changer, solving the immense challenge of nourishing such an expansive Grundstück through hot summer months.
The final piece of the puzzle fell into place with the creation of the bed leading up to Haus A. Today, sculptural Alliums and vibrant Iris blooms rise where bare ground once stood—a quiet testament to six years of patience, care, and living heritage.
